The New York Times recently released its list of “52 Places to GO in 2025,” and among the selected destinations was a spot that surprised many, including myself—a Japanese resident living in Toyama. Even as a local, I wondered what made the NY Times choose this place, especially since it’s not among the most popular tourist destinations in Japan.

For most Japanese travelers, favorite destinations typically include Hokkaido, Hakata, Osaka, Okinawa, and Tokyo. However, the area highlighted in Toyama tends to be overlooked, even by domestic tourists. That said, as someone who knows this region well, I can confidently say there’s plenty to discover here.

To help you experience the best of this hidden gem, I’ll introduce some of my top recommended accommodations. Whether you’re looking for comfort, tradition, or unique experiences, Toyama offers something special for every traveler.

Stay tuned as I share insider tips that will help you make the most of your visit!

If you don’t understand Japanese, it’s essential to download a translation app to help you navigate and communicate during your trip. Additionally, having reliable internet access is crucial for using maps, translation tools, and staying connected. I highly recommend purchasing a SIM card or eSIM before or upon arrival in Japan.

Personally, I purchased an eSIM through Airalo, and I found it incredibly convenient. It’s easy to set up, and once activated, you can stay connected throughout Japan, including Toyama. Keep in mind that free Wi-Fi is not widely available in Toyama, so having your own data plan is very helpful.

If you’re interested in trying Airalo, you can use my promo code to save $3 on your first eSIM data pack. It’s a small discount, but every little bit helps when traveling!

Accommodation grade in Japan

For travelers who are used to accommodations in other countries, you may find that Japanese hotels exceed your expectations, even at the same price point or star rating. Whether you choose a high-end hotel, a mid-range option, or even a traditional ryokan, you’re likely to enjoy a high level of care and attention during your stay.

Accommodation grade in Japan (1day)
  • :[Budget] Economical accommodation(~20 USD)

Which do you choose accommodation grade?

I believe families can have a wonderful time in Japan if they choose accommodations with a hotel grade of 3 stars or higher. In Japan, even 3-star hotels are known for their exceptional cleanliness, attentive service, and well-thought-out amenities, making them comfortable for families.

Hotels in this category often offer:

Spacious rooms (sometimes with family-friendly layouts).

On-site amenities, such as hot springs, breakfast buffets, and sometimes even laundry services.

Kid-friendly services, like rental cribs, kids’ meals, or play areas (depending on the hotel).

For families, staying at a higher-grade hotel ensures a more relaxing and stress-free experience, especially after long days of sightseeing. Japan’s attention to hospitality will surely make your family trip memorable!

From my experience, I believe the grading standards for accommodations in Japan are often different compared to those in other countries. In general, hotels and other accommodations in Japan tend to have higher standards for cleanliness, service, and overall quality. Even budget-friendly options, like business hotels, often provide exceptional hospitality, comfortable rooms, and thoughtful amenities such as pajamas, toiletries, and tea.

Where is to stay in Toyama?

I believe all places in Toyama are safe, making it a great destination for travelers. When it comes to accommodations, there are two main areas to consider:

1. The Station Area (Red Zone)

2. Sogawa Area (Blue Zone)

As a Toyama resident, I recommend accommodations in both areas based on your travel needs. Whether you prioritize convenience or cultural immersion, you’ll find a safe and welcoming place to stay in Toyama.

The station area

This area is ideal for those who prioritize convenience. With Toyama Station as the hub, you’ll have easy access to transportation, including trains, buses, and trams. It’s perfect for visitors who plan to explore other parts of Toyama or neighboring regions. Accommodations here often include modern hotels with excellent amenities.

HOTEL VISCHIO TOYAMA

The had its grand opening on Friday, March 18, 2022. It is conveniently located near Toyama Station, where the Shinkansen bullet train arrives and departs, making it an ideal choice for travelers.

From my own experience, it took me just 5 minutes on foot to walk from Toyama Station to the hotel. Its close proximity to the station makes it a perfect base for exploring the city or traveling to nearby destinations.

Iruka Hostel

The cheapest accommodations to stay near Toyama station. Amazing price for one night for under $30 in 2025. Women-only rooms are also available.

Sogawa area(総曲輪)

This area is closer to the heart of Toyama’s local culture. It’s a great choice if you’re looking to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere, with access to shopping streets, local restaurants, and cultural landmarks like Toyama Castle and museums. Accommodations in Sogawa often offer a more intimate, traditional experience.

Dormy Inn Toyama hotel

Recently, Dormy Inn has become one of the most popular hotel chains in Japan, and for good reason. Known for its delicious food, Dormy Inn stands out by offering unique services that elevate the guest experience.

Buffet Breakfast: Their buffet breakfast is especially popular, featuring a wide variety of local and seasonal dishes. Many locations also serve regional specialties, allowing you to experience the local cuisine without leaving the hotel.

Nightly Noodles: Guests can enjoy free “yonaki soba” (late-night ramen) served every evening, which has become a signature service of Dormy Inn. It’s a simple yet comforting treat before bed.

Hot Spring Service (Onsen): True to the Dormy Inn experience, most locations include a natural hot spring (onsen) or large public bath. After a long day of travel or sightseeing, relaxing in their hot springs is a perfect way to unwind.

If you’re looking for a comfortable stay with excellent food and relaxing amenities, Dormy Inn is an excellent choice for travelers in Japan!
